A strategy for 2027 SEO tools covering licence choices and review cycles
Build a 2027 SEO tools plan that names Semrush, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, Moz and Google Search Console, compares licence costs and sets quarterly review dates.
What to take away
- Start from two decisions per quarter, not a wish list of logos. Buy the licence that answers each decision.
- Licence structure beats headline priceAhrefs publishes Starter to Enterprise tiers with credit limits, Semrush sells Pro, Guru and Business with extra seats charged on top, and Moz Pro lists Standard to Premium tiers.
- Screaming Frog SEO Spider is free up to 500 URLs per crawl, so the technical layer can start at no cost.
- A suite is not automatically cheaper than separate tools. Count the modules your team will actually open.
- Fix the review cycle now15 January, 15 April, 15 July and 15 October 2027, with a renewal diary three months before each licence ends.
Start with the decision, not the shortlist
Write down two decisions the next quarter has to settle. "Which service pages need rewriting before the spring peak?" passes that test. "Get better at search" does not.
Give each decision a question, an owner, a deadline and the name of the person who can approve spend. An objective nobody can sign stalls the purchase and leaves the team on free tiers for another quarter.
That list also fixes which surfaces you measure. AI summaries, marketplaces and social feeds sit outside Google Search Console, so a stack built only on classic rankings reports on part of the demand.
Semrush frames the aim as being found wherever customers search, which is why the AI-answer layer belongs in a 2027 plan. Our 2027 trends and licence renewal guide explains how that reaches English renewal decisions.
Keep business and marketing objectives apart. Tools serve coverage and qualified visits, but they are judged on revenue and retention.
What the written strategy contains
Two pages, six sections. Longer documents go unread.
- The objective and the decision it supports.
- The surfaces in scope, and why the rest are out.
- Layers mapped to named tools, each with owner, seat count and renewal date.
- Moneyannual cost, notice period, repricing clause, signatory.
- Evidencethe report, segment and week that settles each question.
- Review dates and the stop rule.
Date and version the document. Plans drift when a licence changes and the paper does not.
Licence choices: what each tier actually buys
Tier ladder
- Ahrefs
- Starter, Lite, Standard, Advanced, Enterprise
- Semrush
- Pro, Guru, Business
- Moz Pro
- Standard, Medium, Large, Premium
- Screaming Frog SEO Spider
- Free crawler, paid annual licence
Billing unit
- Ahrefs
- Monthly credits plus included users
- Semrush
- Projects and keywords by tier; extra seats charged on top
- Moz Pro
- Campaigns and seats by tier
- Screaming Frog SEO Spider
- Per user licence; free to 500 URLs per crawl
Check before renewal
- Ahrefs
- Export allowance, and what happens when credits run out
- Semrush
- Seat count, project limits, API rows
- Moz Pro
- Campaign limits when client sites are added
- Screaming Frog SEO Spider
- Crawl volume, scheduled crawls
Ask for the renewal price in writing, not the introductory one. The repricing clause is the figure your 2027 budget should carry.
Is a suite cheaper than separate tools?
Not by default. A suite wins when four or more layers overlap and one login saves real admin time. It loses when you pay for modules nobody opens.
Choosing between the two biggest overlapping vendors is its own exercise, and our Ahrefs versus Semrush comparison for UK agencies sets out where each one earns its seat.
For example, a five-person team on a plan of £180 per seat per month pays £10,800 a year. If three people log in, the effective cost is £300 per active user per month.
Run the arithmetic on layers, not features. A content tool plus the free crawler can cost less than a suite whose content module nobody opens.
Score each candidate on five questions. Does it answer a named decision? Can you export what you pay for? Who owns the seat when someone leaves? What is the notice period? How long until the team is productive?
Review cycles and dates for 2027
Give each cycle one objective, one change and one piece of evidence. Attempt more and you cannot tell which move worked. A first cycle should test something small, such as one reporting layer or one page group.
That rhythm is ordinary practice elsewhere. The GOV.UK agile delivery guidance describes iterative working with a regular review point.
Date / Action
- 15 January
- First quarterly licence decision; check credit and seat use
- 15 April
- Weigh the evidence, then renew or cancel
- 15 July
- Mid-year export test and repricing check
- 15 October
- Decide the 2028 stack before renewal letters arrive
Keeping the stack useful after the first year is a matter of holding this rhythm, not buying again. Our ninety-day licence sequence puts the weekly check, monthly review and quarterly licence decision on a calendar.
Diarise each renewal three months ahead, when the price arrives and data-processing terms are worth re-reading. If you hold client data, the ICO advice for small organisations sets out the duties behind those terms.
Common questions
How much should a small UK team budget?
Budget for the layer you cannot handle in-house rather than per head. Many teams start with the free crawler, Google Search Console and one paid licence, then add seats once a report has a regular reader.
How often should SEO tool licences be reviewed?
Quarterly for decisions, annually for the whole stack. Use 15 January, 15 April, 15 July and 15 October 2027, and diarise every renewal three months early.
What makes an SEO tool strategy fail?
Overlapping tools, no named owner and no stop rule. Two crawlers that disagree cost time nobody budgeted for.
Which licence should we cancel first?
The one whose report nobody opens, or the one you cannot export from. Check the notice period first, because annual plans often commit for the full term.
